Dr. Payman Pirnazar, Pediatric Dentist

Q:
My pediatrician says that she refers children to the dentist at the age of 3. Do you agree?
A: I have discussed this situation with several pediatricians. Some pediatricians are concerned that a child below the age of 3 may not be able to be cooperative for dental treatment. However, our office sees many patients below this age, primarily to educate the parents on proper oral hygiene.

The American Dental Association (ADA) and I recommend that a child's visit be made with a Pediatric Dentist within 6 months after eruption of the first baby teeth or before the 12 months of age. With early parental education and proper instruction such problems may be PREVENTED rather than having to be restored.
