As you know, the top surfaces of the teeth have many "hills and valleys." Bacteria can hide in the crevices of these "valleys." Since tooth brush bristles can not usually reach these areas, cavities may start from within these crevices.
Simply put, dental sealants are a protective layer that are applied to cover these crevices to prevent the formation of cavities. Sealants work best when they are applied within 6 erupts after eruption of permanent teeth. Because sealants bond to the top surface of teeth, there is no discomfort when applying them.
