Dr. Payman Pirnazar, Pediatric Dentist

Q:
My dentist says that my 3 year old son has a lot of cavities and that he should be taken to a pediatric dentist to have them fixed under sedation. I am concerned about putting my son to sleep! Please help.
A: Let me start by saying that I understand your concern towards the use of sedation for your child. It is important to understand that most pediatric dentists will usually try a variety of behavior management techniques prior to the use of sedation. In our office, we successfully treat over 95% of our patients with such behavior management techniques and without any sedative medications.

If some type of pharmacological method is necessary to provide quality treatment, there are a variety of options available to the Pediatric Dentist. Pediatric dentists are highly trained to administer a variety of sedations including nitrous oxide and oral sedations which will help a child become more comfortable and relaxed without the child being "put to sleep." In addition, the Pediatric Dentist may arrange for an I.V. sedation or General Anesthesia to be administered by an Anesthesiologist.

I advise you to express your concern with your Pediatric Dentist when discussing the best treatment option for your child.
