Dr. Pirnazar (finally) Introduces Laser Dentistry...

You have probably heard of the use of laser technology by ophthalmologists and dermatologist. For years, we have been asked why we do not use laser technology at our high-tech office. As a leader in the integration of technology into clinical dentistry, Dr. Pirnazar has been interested in the role of dental lasers in restorative dentistry for many years. His response to this question had simply been, "Dental laser technology is not clinically there yet and does not meet the high standards we have for our patients."

After over 10 years of development and refinement, the new state-of-the-art Waterlase Laser System is one that we feel confident about and proud to introduce as a new addition to our practice.

The Waterlase laser works by combining laser energy with a gentle spray of water from a hand piece. Believe it or not, the energized water spray (not the laser directly) is cutting the tooth structure. Because water is cutting the tooth and the hand piece never touches the tooth, the nerves do not transmit any feelings of pain since the heat and vibration feelings are eliminated. This allows your child to have a more comfortable experience.

The Waterlase laser system often eliminates the need for local anesthesia shots, which Dr. Pirnazar usually calls “sleepy-juice”. Since we often don’t administer local anesthesia while using the Waterlase, your child leaves the office without 3-4 hours of numbness! In addition, the sound of the traditional hand piece is eliminated with the laser—only a “popping” sound like popcorn popping is heard as the water sprays the tooth.

The Waterlase laser system not only prepares teeth for restorations but has many other indications in dentistry. The laser can be used to safely remove excess gum tissue (often after braces), relieve pain from cold sores and fever blisters, and remove excess tissue connections (for example a frenum or tongue-tie). As the waterlase cuts soft tissue, it cauderizes the tissue as it cuts, creating a “laser bandage” and essentially no bleeding.

What are the benefits of using the Waterlase laser system?

  • Often eliminates the need for local anesthesia "shots" that leaves your child numb for 3-4 hours

  • Eliminates the sound and vibration usually associated of the traditional dental "drill"

  • Minimally-Invasive Dentistry (MID) - allows minimal removal of "good" tooth structure surrounding a cavity

  • Gentle to the pulp (nerves and blood vessels within a tooth)
Comfortable, quick, safe, and easy for your child

What is the Waterlase laser system used for?

  • Restoration of teeth (fillings)

  • Safe removal of excess gum tissue (often after braces)
Relieve pain from cold sores and fever blisters

  • Safe removal of excess soft tissue connections (for example a frenum or tongue-tie) without minimal post-op bleeding since it cauterizes tissue or essentially creates a “laser bandage” as laser cuts soft tissue

The Waterlase, in conjunction with our DIAGNOdent Laser Cavity Detector, advanced digital x-ray technology, and electronic patient records, demonstrate our commitment in providing safe, quality, state-of-the-art dental care to our patients.
